The goal of the Vaugel Sculpture Studio is to share the sculpting techniques we have found necessary for each student to access and use the creative inspiration that lives in each of us.
Using techniques that are based on geometry, anatomy, and structure, all the classes are taught in three parts.
Instruction is for all levels. We seek highly motivated students who are hungry for basic knowledge. We provide as many opportunities as possible for maximum learning based on individual motivation and proven group dynamics. The teaching approach is based on a profound geometric and anatomical analysis of the figure. It emphasizes boney landmarks, the weighting of planes in the creation of forms, the skull and direct observation. .
These classes have been a great service to many portrait painters as well as sculptors. They enhance the knowledge of the placement of information necessary for the creation of any good portrait, as well as teaching the geometric methods used "to see" more clearly. These techniques are of great service for those wishing to draw or paint, and add structure to all forms of the recreation of the portrait or figure.
We are "process" not "product" oriented teachers. We know that everyone has a multitude of creative energy and sculptural ideas waiting to come forth from within. It is our desire to give you the tools and the processes we ourselves use in order to create our own sculptural visions. We believe letting go of "product" orientation during our program will greatly free you in your ability to simply learn, allowing for the more critical, and painful aspects of the learning process to take a back seat.
Using our geometric and graphic approach will greatly increase your ability to objectify and "fix" your own sculptures. We believe this will diminish your dependence on teachers, giving you the professional ability you are craving, and take many of you out of the realm of "student sculptors" and into the realm of "professional sculptors". Our definition of "Professional" is not the ability to sell your own work, but the ability to create your own work.
"I am dedicated to empowering creative beings to fulfill their sculpture dreams and desires in a relaxed studio atmosphere, using a proven geometric system of seeing, and the fine art of figure modeling."
All great works are built on a solid foundation, and it's no different in sculpture. A good armature is crucial not only for proportions, but for the structural foundation as well.
My favorite clay in France is “Gres de St Amand GSA - lisse“
In the USA - “WED “ clay is the best figure modeling clay I have ever found.
In the studio I make Latex, Silicone, and Plaster Waste molds. I do not teach mold making, but my students who are interested can assist when I am working on my own molds.
Casting in Bronze is a magical experience consisting of hard labor, with intense attention to detail. The rewards are wonderful, but not for everyone or for everything. We do not do any bronze casting here at the studio. Look for a foundry near you.
"To help myself and others manifest heaven on earth through the use of creative energy and the divine art of sculpting, this is my goal."
