Critical Recognition

As a young artist two giants of the critical world of art recognized the talents of Martine Vaugel. They are mentioned here with thanks from the artist for they recognition and encouragement they inspired.

The Other Woman

1980 Clement Greenberg : The most influential art critic in the 20th century, Critic for the New York Times, Champion of Abstract Expressionism

Dear Ms Vaugel,
Thank you for letting me see the slides of your sculptures. Allowing for my distrust of reproductions…I must say that the originals should be good and maybe more than just good.I won’t discriminate among them… my regret is that I haven’t seen your recent art in the original.  About galleries, I’ll name two that show non- abstract sculpture. You can say that I suggested you approach them. Let me know what happens. My phone number is…xxx xxx xxxx

Best wishes,
Sincerely,
Clement Greenberg

1980 Gerald Nordland : John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellow

Dear Martine,
It was good to speak with you on the phone today… Your work looks very skillful and professional. So often people who work in bronze tend to become seduced by the material itself. You seem to be using it without that problem. Lots of things catch my eye in your work and seem worthy of development. You have done a great deal of work. It is impossible to not be touched by the great art of the past. Build on it. If you can reach out to your own inspiration with only a subliminal reference to classical memories, you will be better off.

Best of luck and keep me informed.
Sincerely,
Jerry Nordland

—  Notes by the artist

"My life has been a magnificent journey. Some of the most memorable moments I attempt to share with you here."

Rodin Grand Prize Exhibitions

"My experiences in Japan, winning awards in 2 consecutive “Rodin Grand Prize Exhibitions” for my heroic sculptures of Mahatma Gandhi and Sylvester Stallone, definitely need special mention on these pages. To be honored by the awards and acceptance of the Shikanai, Fujisankai family, in such a refined cultural environment, mixed with the exceptional modernity of the Japanese culture, was a most ecstatic and humbling experience."

"Being accepted into the Society of French Artistes and standing in the Grand Palais in the same “Salon Des Artistes Francais “ that my heroes Rodin, Carpeau and so many others stood before me, winning awards and being placed at the entrance of the Grand Palais for 2 salons, will forever be among the greatest highlights of my life. The indescribable feeling of excitement, humility and pride all at once… the ecstasy was so overwhelming that I can continue to relive it deeply today without even trying."

Age of Steel

Age of Steel

Age of Steel This monumental full body portrait of Sylvester Stallone was commissioned by him in 1986.

Martine chose to title this sculpture “the Age Of Steel” because Sylvester Stallone epitomized in many ways, the American Dream.

It was the “steel age” of America, where industrialization gave the United States world power. It was his use of steel body building tools to create his famous physique, plus his swift rise from obscurity to a world renown celebrity, that made him a perfect symbol of the American dream, hence the title, the “Age of Steel”.

In 1990 it won a prize in the Rodin Grand Prize Monumental Figure Competition and was placed in the Hakone Open Air Museum in Japan.
